I photographed the engagement session of Magda and Dan last week. They are getting married this fall at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine, which is a gorgeous venue! Magda and Dan brought their fun-loving dog- he was in love with the smells of the farm! Here are a few of my faves from the day:

I photographed Stephanie and Craig’s engagement session in Winthrop, Maine. They had their adorable dog with them, although we didn’t see much of him (we could hear him crashing around in the woods from time to time)! I’m looking forward to working with them again this October on their wedding day! Here are a few of my faves:

I was surprised that we were able to get this shot! I occurred in the five seconds that their rambunctious lab sat still!

Andrea and Nick are getting married in a month at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge- so we decided to do their engagement session there as well! We were caught in a freak rain storm, but Andrea and Nick were troopers! Here are a few of our faves:

I photographed an engagement session for Lianne and Dan a few days ago- what a great couple! They will be having their wedding later this fall in Winthrop, Maine. Here are some of my favorites from the shoot:

I photographed Erica and John’s engagement session in Boston last weekend. They were good sports not to wear their jackets- it was a cold cold spring day! Eric will be photographing their wedding in just a few months at Sandy Island in New Hampshire! Here are some of our favorite photographs from their session:

One technique that I use a lot is selective focus. I shoot with my lenses at wide apertures (1.4 to 2.8) and often with longer lenses (my 85mm is my favorite!) to achieve a shallow depth of field. What that means is that only a small portion of the photograph is sharply in focus, while the rest is pleasantly out of focus. I use selective focus in a number of ways:

With detail shots, I like to have the detail (flowers, cakes, etc.) in the foreground in focus with the bride and groom somewhere in the background, out of focus.

Sometimes I like to have only one of the couple (the bride OR the groom) in sharp focus, while the other is just an accessory for the photograph! Here, I wanted to draw attention to Cara’s beautiful eyes:

This is one of my favorite shots- flowers and ring in the foreground, groom out of focus in the background, looking at the bride:

And finally, another one of my favorite shots (Eric took this one- he has a way with the groomsmen…)- the groom is in sharp focus while the groomsmen gradually recede out of focus:
