When Teresa first contacted me several months ago, I was really excited to hear her vision for her wedding week.  She wanted several days of coverage, and each of the events had some sort of cultural component to it that showed the beauty, color, and music of Mexico.  She explained that most of their friends and family in attendance had never been to Mexico, and she wanted them to have the chance to really experience Mexico during their trip.  And she and Guy definitely delivered– from fire dancers to Mexican rodeo performers on horseback, from traditional dances (by award winning dance troupes) to mariachis, the entertainment during their wedding week was fabulous!  Add to that the fact that Teresa and Guy are two of the sweetest people and they were surrounded by a wonderful group of family and friends, and you end up with a truly fantastic wedding.

Teresa and Guy were married at Martoca Beach Gardens in Bucerias, Mexico.  I have been in and out of this region for years, and I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the venues that are available.  So when Teresa told me that she was getting married at Martoca, which boasted a huge expanse of green lawn shaded by palm trees that went right up to the edge of the beach and the ocean beyond, I thought it sounded too good to be true.  But Martoca was an unbelievably pleasant surprise, allowing for a traditional outdoor, garden wedding with lush greenery and a beautiful ocean backdrop.   The wedding was coordinated and designed by Odette and her team at Martoca Weddings, and they did a wonderful job with the space!

Congratulations, Teresa and Guy!  And many thanks to Eric, my second shooter for the wedding.

I have so many wonderful things to say about Sarah and Marc’s beautiful destination wedding in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  But my FAVORITE thing about their wedding is the fact that from the moment she walked down the aisle, they quite literally beamed at one another.  Their never-ending smiles were infectious- I challenge you to look at the two of them below and not beam right back at them.  For me, at least, it’s an impossible task.  I’m smiling right now as I write this blog post!

Sarah and Marc met at work– they are both teachers in California.  Sarah is a special education teacher, and Marc is a math and science teacher.  When they started working at the same school, their classrooms shared a wall, and Sarah said that she first noticed the sound of Marc’s voice from the other side of the wall.  They became friends first, though, and didn’t start dating until they had been friends for more than a year.  They started spending time together in a group during happy hour after work, and Sarah told me that they shared their first kiss after work in a dive bar!  They decided to get married while Marc was teaching in South Africa– Sarah visited him there, and he surprised her with the ring!

I asked Sarah and Marc to share their favorite moment from the wedding with me.  Sarah said:

When I came around the corner to walk down the aisle- I remember hearing the ocean, which I love deeply- I had both my parents next to me and I felt like I locked eyes with almost all of my friends… and then I saw Marc and we both started laughing we were so excited. I was stunned by how much fun I had at our actual ceremony. I have never lived more fully in a single moment.  Marc said that his favorite moment was right after our ceremony, when we got to spend a few minutes in Yichud. In a Jewish wedding the bride and groom spend a few minutes in seclusion after the ceremony to let what has happened sink in. We got to taste all our great food- we toasted each other. It was so special to have those few minutes alone just us- at the same time we could hear our friends laughing outside which made us both realize how lucky we were to have each other and to be surrounded by these incredible friends and family.

I asked them why they decided to have a destination wedding, and Sarah said:

Since our best friends are scattered around the country we knew we wanted some real time with each one of them. A destination wedding allowed us to be on a vacation with them. We both felt we got to have meaningful extended time with each one of our 34 guests and we both commented on how we felt closer to every one of them after the experience. We also wanted our wedding to reflect who we are as a couple. Marc and I have both been profoundly changed by our time teaching in other countries and we bounded over our passion for this early on- so a wedding with a global theme seemed like the perfect fit.

Sarah and Marc had some wonderful details! They shared them with me:

*Dress- Anne Barge- Bliss Bridal in Del Mar, California (also where Sarah bought her earrings and her hair piece)
*Shoes- Badgley Mischka (Zappos)
*Invitation- Made by minted and then Sarah and Marc stamped and cut out the compass embellishments.
*Programs- The covers were designed on Esty by Robin Bellomy. Marc and Sarah designed and assembled the rest.
*Menus- designed by Marc, assembled by Sarah
*Favors- Since Marc and I met as teachers we wanted to pay tribute to that. We chose to donate school supplies through the United Nations Children’s Fund to Children in Internally Displaced Person’s Camps. I also spent time working for a school in an IDP camp- so this was a great opportunity for us to celebrate who we are while honoring the students who have enriched our lives. Marc designed and printed the cards.
*Table Cards- I purchased the international mailing stamps on Etsy, and then used rubber stamps to create the rest of the table card. This was another opportunity bring in our shared passion for teaching and learning around the world. Each table was named for a place we have taught or a place where we have worked on educational policy.
*Additional Table Décor- (Globe, suitcase, plane, etc)- Pottery Barn
*Escort Cards- Purchased on Etsy by SunshineandRavioli
*Chair signs, cake topper- Purchased on Etsy by Morgann Hill
*Straws- “Coconut Kiss Margarita, Love S & M.” – Classy with a touch of irreverence We had these made on Etsy and then cut them down ourselves to fit the margarita glasses.
*Chuppah- Handmade by Marc’s mom and completed with Marc’s grandmother’s lace table cloth
*Ring Box- It was a vintage cigar box that belonged to my grandfather. It used to hold his harmonicas. Hearing him play was a favorite childhood memory of mine.
*Yarmulkes- handmade by Sarah’s dear friend Mary Piper as well as Marc’s step mom.
*Welcome Bags- Marc designed and printed the tags to match our menus. He designed the perfect little vintage looking plane.

Courtney and Storm were married a few weeks ago in one of my favorite little towns in the world: Sayulita, Mexico.  For the past few years, Courtney and Storm have made Sayulita their home– they run one of the cutest boutique hotels just steps from the beach in Sayulita called La Casona (if you are going to Sayulita, I highly recommend it- be sure to check it out)!

Their wedding had a Mexican flavor with a laid-back vibe, and I just loved their style!  But before I get to their wedding, I’m going to back up and have them tell you the story of how they met and decided to get married.  I think it’s fabulously romantic, and their relationship has been one big adventure from day one.  I asked Courtney to talk about how she and Storm started dating, and this is what she said:

Storm and I met in Costa Rica in 2007 from a mutual friend. We were both living there at the time; Storm in San Jose and me in Nosara. We had both gone to ASU in Tempe but apparently had to move thousands of miles away to find each other. Our buddy Chad brought Storm to the hotel/bar I was working at and we stayed in touch…..as friends. Storm will say our first date was sometime that year at an Italian restaurant in San Jose. I went to the city to stay at his hostel and he took me out for dinner and drinks. I thought he was being a nice friend of a friend. He thought it was a date.

At the beginning of 2008, Storm invited me to go on the bus trip with him and 5 other people. I knew I had to go. When would I ever get another opportunity to live on a school bus for two months? We left Los Angeles in March 2008 and got to Panama sometime in May. In between that time, we realized that being friends was easy and there was more to our relationship that we had thought. Our first kiss was in San Cristobal de las Casas in Mexico April 13th 2008. In January 2009 we moved to Sayulita and have been here ever since.

Storm bought the ring with the help of Maile, my matron of honor at the beginning of last year. They both threw me off track so I had no idea he was going to pop the question. But he managed to ask for my parents’ blessing while we were up visiting in Arizona. One random Monday night (March 21st hehe, 2011) Storm decided to make us dinner at home here in Sayulita. He came out with a bottle of not so fancy sparkling wine and I kind of said, “you really want to drink that right now? Why?…we already have red wine. What’s the special occasion?” As soon as I said that, I knew. He immediately got down on his knee and told me that he couldn’t wait any longer to ask me. The ring was basically burning a hole in his pocket.  He kept coming to me with all these grand vacations and I kept asking why, is that where you’re going to ask me to marry you? …So he did it where he knew I wouldn’t expect it. It was perfect and totally caught me by surprise.

Here are a few of my favorites from their day:

Sayulita Wedding

I loved the style of their wedding- it had a distinctly Mexican feeling to it, and you can tell that Courtney (and Storm, perhaps?) spent countless hours putting together all of the details of this gorgeous wedding.  A combination of blue and red, their wedding colors provided a gorgeous contrast to the endless sky and ocean that was visible from their ceremony site.

I asked Courtney how she put the whole thing together, and this is what she said:

Wedding details…..hmmmmmm. I was never the girl that had planned her wedding as a child, but I had so much fun. I bought magazines down here every time I went to Costco (which is the only place to buy one) and checked out all the blogs. There are soooooooo many ideas out there and I loved so many, I’m not really sure how it ended the way it did. I knew I liked the Mexican theme, bc we live in Mexico. I didn’t want it to be traditional. I wanted a simple, classy feel with punches of color.  I loved the combination of red and turquoise and I had my heart set on the Otomi runners from Oaxaca, red glass hearts from Guadalajara, and the loteria game for seating. I bought the papel picado off Esty, Ay Mujer. And made a lot of the details myself with the help of Storm, our friends and my mama. I really wanted to plan the wedding on my own and did, but I had amazing tips and sharing from the wedding planners/coordinators here in Sayulita. They were my saving grace, honestly.

I also knew that if I was going to spend over $1000 on a dress that I was going to wear it all night long, so that’s why I changed the look before and after the ceremony with the help of the red flower and turquoise necklace. And I would have worn my dress for days. After the wedding, Storm and I went to a local bar for one last beer and when we got home around 2am I stood in the mirror and felt sad it was over. I contemplated putting it on the day next day and rocking it again. I should have come to think about it. The day after wouldn’t have been so weird, now..it totally would be.

I wear flip flops all the time here in Sayulita, but bought Maile and I sandals for the wedding day. Friday, the day before the wedding we were sitting down on the malecon and I saw red Havianas in the window of a surf shop. I knew I had to wear those instead of what I originally bought, so we got them. I never even pulled out the others from the box they were in.

My favorite part of the day was getting out of the car at the ceremony site. My heart was pounding, I became extremely nervous and emotional. Everyone was waiting, I could hear the music, and GO! I had some friends tell me that when I came around the corner I said, “it’s so beautiful” and started crying. I don’t think I stopped until I started speaking. The whole ceremony was emotional and true and I really do remember it all. The rest of the night blurs together…it really does go by so fast, but I can remember our words and the feeling I had at that moment.   I asked Storm was his favorite moment was and he just said, “when I said my vows.”  :)

I loved this wedding, and I had such a blast with Courtney and Storm!  Everything from their ceremony/reception site to the decor to the food (the reception was catered by Don Pedro’s in Sayulita, and the wonderful head chef there is Nick Parrillo) was absolutely breathtaking!  Courtney’s hair and makeup was done by Kori of kolorbykori.com– she did a fabulous job!

Have a wonderful weekend!
