Scott King’s CD Shoot

Scott King, a good friend and a great musician, asked me to photograph him for his upcoming CD release. Of course, it was absolutely freezing out the day that we wanted to do the shoot, so we did most of the photographs in the grungiest place we could find- his basement! I have had a lot of people ask me about the lighting on this shot- I was photographing at 1600 wide open with my 85 1.8, and my husband Eric was using a floor halogen lamp to light Scott from the side. Basically, he was to my right, tilting the lamp down on Scott until we go the amount/direction of the light that we wanted falling on his face. It just goes to show that you don’t need to own expensive strobes or daylight balanced lights to make beautiful portraits- you just have to understand the direction and the quality of the light that you are working with. Here we wanted something grungy that would simulate the harsh spotlight of a stage or club, so this portrait is just what we were going for!
